METHUEN — Mayor Neil Perry and Chief Scott J. McNamara are pleased to announce that the newest member of the Methuen Police Department completed his academy training and will now enter the department’s field training program.
Officer Steven DiLeo graduated from the Northern Essex Community College (NECC) Police Academy on Friday, Nov. 19, where he received the physical fitness award.
Officer DiLeo grew up in Methuen and currently resides in the city with his girlfriend and their two children. He is a 2013 graduate of Methuen High School, and went on to serve six years in the U.S. Army Reserves while also working as a member of the grounds crew at NECC.
The NECC Academy is the first municipal police academy and first community college in Massachusetts to be accepted into Georgetown University Law Center’s Active Bystandership for Law Enforcement (ABLE) Project.
The ABLE Project was created in 2020 as a national training and support initiative focused on building a culture of peer intervention that prevents harm. The program emphasizes three pillars — reducing mistakes, preventing misconduct and promoting health and wellness.
“Officer DiLeo has been a member of the Methuen community for his entire life, and we’re excited to welcome him as our newest member as he begins serving his hometown,” Chief McNamara said. “I am looking forward to the contributions he will make and want to congratulate him on beginning his career as a full-time police officer.”
“The training Officer DiLeo underwent at the NECC academy is a groundbreaking and meaningful program that will benefit him, his colleagues and our entire community,” Mayor Perry said.
Officer DiLeo will take part in the Methuen Police Department’s 17-week field training program prior to beginning full-time patrol.
