SOUTH EASTON — Superintendent Luis Lopes is pleased to announce that Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School senior Brian Jansen has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and for his recently completed project he worked on a new addition to the school’s baseball fields.
The project idea was first raised in September 2019 when Jansen reached out to SRVTHS Supervisor of Operations and Grounds Scott Nelson. He indicated his desire to do a volunteer project for the school as part of his Eagle Scout process as a member of Troop 7 out of Foxborough. He noted that the school had recently renovated its baseball fields, and there was a lack of gear boxes for players’ helmets, gloves and other equipment.
Nelson knew this would be a valuable addition to the fields, and they agreed that Jansen could build gear boxes for each dugout on the fields. After designing the plans, drafting a materials list and submitting an application to the Mayflower Council for approval, a construction start date of April 2020 was chosen.
The plan was put on hold when the pandemic caused schools to shut down, in addition to lumber shortages, supply price increases and the Mayflower Council suspending in-person meetings.
Jansen stayed in touch with Nelson regularly during the last year to ensure the project remained active, and in March 2021 the plans were approved. SRVTHS supplied the lumber, with remaining materials covered through donations, and construction began.
Jansen was recognized for achieving his Eagle Scout rank during a ceremony at Adams Farm in Walpole on Sept. 23.
“Brian exhibited a great work ethic during this entire project and learned a lot about the paperwork and approval process along the way,” Nelson said. “He also learned how to adjust schedules and deal with unexpected roadblocks as a result of the pandemic putting the project on hold for a whole year. He is a fine young man and it was an awesome pleasure for me to be a part of this milestone. It is an honor for anyone to achieve Eagle Scout status and it takes perseverance and determination to get there, and Brian is very deserving.”
Jansen, who is in the SRVTHS Collision Repair program, is also employed at Bourne’s Auto Center in South Easton through the school’s Cooperative Education program, which provides supervised workplace employment opportunities and learning experiences for students.
