BOURNE — The Bourne School Committee announces that the committee unanimously passed a resolution at its meeting last Wednesday.
The resolution reads as follows:
“The Committee recognizes that individual comments by members of the Committee can have an impact on the community. To that end, the Committee has reaffirmed for all of its members the importance of communicating in a manner that not only upholds the policies of the Bourne School Committee, but reflects the values of respect and responsibility that are the hallmark of our school culture.
“Regarding the specific complaint that was brought to our attention a few weeks ago, as a Committee, we collectively disavow any offensive statements that have been made and affirm our commitment to the principles of our non-discrimination policy. The School Committee will not tolerate comments that offend and harm members of our school community. This includes those who identify as transgender or non-binary and the entire LGBTQIA community. We would like to state unequivocally that you are welcome here as you are and that we as a Committee are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where ALL students and staff can truly be seen and valued in their entirety.”

The resolution, which was voted in executive session, passed unanimously with a 7-0 vote. All members of the School Committee were present for the vote.
Following the vote the resolution was read in open session.
The resolution reaffirms the School Committee’s commitment to the district’s non-discrimination policy, which can be found on the Bourne Public School’s website here.
“The Bourne School Committee and Bourne Public Schools will continue to uphold the principles and values in our non-discrimination policy, which ensures the rights and responsibilities of all individuals within the district,” Chair Emily Berry said. “It is critical that we as a committee have a clear and unified position protecting each and every student we are entrusted to educate, and this resolution reaffirms this commitment.”
