NEWBURYPORT — City Marshal Mark Murray and the Newburyport Police Department would like to remind residents that stealing or vandalizing political signs on private property can lead to serious criminal consequences.
The Newburyport Police Department has been notified recently of several allegations of political sign thefts.
“Regardless of political affiliation, Americans have a right to express political opinions via signs in their yards, and those who trespass, vandalize or steal in an effort to interrupt those rights face arrest and prosecution,” Marshal Murray said. “The Newburyport Police Department encourages everyone to respect each others’ opinions and property.”
Trespassing on private property, vandalism, and theft are criminal offenses that can lead to arrest, imprisonment and/or fines, as well as a criminal record.
Anyone who observes someone stealing or vandalizing a political sign, or any other property in Newburyport, is asked to call Newburyport Police at (978) 462-4411.
