PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association is pleased to recognize National Hispanic American Heritage Month on behalf of police departments throughout the state.

National Hispanic American Heritage Month is recognized from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year as a way to pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

The dates celebrate the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile.

There are several resources, activities and more listed at hispanicheritagemonth.gov for those looking to learn more about the month and its background.

“The State of Rhode Island has seen countless contributions from the Hispanic community, and there are many Hispanic police officers throughout the state who put their lives on the line every day,” said RIPCA Executive Director Sid Wordell. “As part of National Hispanic American Heritage Month we would like to recognize and thank these officers for all they do on behalf of our residents, as well as thank all of the officers statewide who continue to keep our communities safe.”

National Hispanic American Heritage Month was first proclaimed by President George H.W. Bush in 1989.
