MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson and Old Rochester Regional High School Principal Michael Devoll are pleased to announce that ORRHS students in the Lifeskills Classrooms will learn about public safety roles from first responders during a special event tomorrow.
WHEN:
Thursday, Sept. 30 at 12:30 p.m.
WHERE:
Old Rochester Regional High School, 135 Marion Road, Mattapoisett
WHO:
- ORRHS Lifeskills Classrooms students and teachers
- ORRHS Principal Devoll
- Local first responders
- Massachusetts State Police
WHAT:
Students in Old Rochester Regional High School’s Lifeskills Classrooms have been learning about public service career paths in their community. To learn more about different roles and to kick off their curriculum unit, students are working in pairs to conduct research projects about the level of education, training and experience they would need to be in each type of role.
Many students have expressed interest in emergency services including police, fire and emergency medical services. To help students learn more about these careers, on Thursday the Massachusetts State Police and Mattapoisett’s first responders will bring different emergency vehicles to the high school campus. Students will be working on their interviewing skills and preparing topics ahead of time, and will be able to see equipment and talk with public safety professionals during the event.
“We are excited to be welcoming first responders to our campus this week to talk with our Lifeskills Classrooms students about their roles in the community,” Principal Devoll said. “Overall, our students will be able to learn more about these valuable public service positions and continue to build positive relationships with community members and professionals.”
Through the curriculum unit students are also learning about other public service roles such as highway department personnel, medical staff and more.
Residents should note that the Massachusetts State Police is scheduled to bring a helicopter to Thursday’s event. There should be no cause for concern for anyone who may observe the helicopter in the area of Route 6 in Mattapoisett and the ORRHS campus on Thursday.
