GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Fire Department has been awarded approximately $92,727.27 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), for the 2020 Fiscal Year.
Funds will pay for new equipment including, four Automatic Chest Compression Devices (CPR) and 76 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to help protect the health and safety of the public and fire fighting personal against fire and fire-related hazards.
“This grant will help the department purchase essential equipment that will keep our firefighters safe and help them provide the highest possible level of care to residents in need,” Chief Smith said.
The department will be responsible for the remaining $9,272.73 of the cost of the equipment that is not covered by the grant.
Since 2015, Gloucester Fire Department has received over $2 million in Assistance to Firefighter Grants, used for equipment and training courses. This grant went into effect Aug 30 2021 and the budget period goes until Aug. 29, 2023.
Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) are allocated to fire departments nationally to fund and aid the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments. These federal grants help firefighters obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
