WEST NEWBURY — Chief Michael Dwyer and Superintendent Justin Bartholomew report that the West Newbury Fire Department responded to a roof fire at the site of the Pentucket Regional High School building project today.
At about 11:20 a.m., West Newbury Fire responded to the 22 Main St. school campus for a report of a fire. Upon arrival, first responders found smoke coming from the roof area of the new high school, which is currently under construction.
Firefighters brought the fire under control within a half-hour. No one was injured. Crews remain on the scene.
West Newbury Fire coordinated with the Groveland Fire Department in its initial response. West Newbury Fire was supported at the scene by the Newburyport Fire Department, the Georgetown Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance. Crews from the Newbury Fire Department and the Merrimac Fire Department provided station coverage.
The fire is not considered suspicious at this time. The fire remains under investigation by the West Newbury Police Department, West Newbury Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“This situation could have ended a lot worse. We appreciate the quick response by the workers who put out the initial flames, and thank the West Newbury Fire Department and the other departments for responding so quickly to secure the scene,” Superintendent Bartholomew said.
Damage to the roof area was minor. The building project is not expected to be delayed, nor does the District expect to incur additional costs.
