HULL — Superintendent Judith Kuehn and Principal Christine Cappadona are pleased to share that third grade students at the Lillian M. Jacobs Elementary School concluded a Battle of the Books competition this week.
During the year students worked in teams to read assigned books and discuss them. Every book assigned was read by at least one team member.
On Tuesday, June 15, the teams of students then competed against each other in a Jeopardy-style game projected on a Smart board. Questions varied about characters, events, setting and connections.
This was the first year Jacobs third graders participated in Battle of the Books, with four total classes competing against each other. In the end, Laurie Buttkus’ Blue Whales team won the championship. Winning team members included Chase Silva, Billy Littlefield and Grace McMullen.
Buttonwood Books and Toys donated books for the Grade 3 champions, and Nantasket Sweets donated $5 gift cards for the Grade 3 champions. Scoops Ice Cream Company donated a free ice cream to all class winners (16 total gift certificates).
“Our students worked very hard right up until the end of the school year, and it was fun to hold this contest and acknowledge our Battle of the Books participants for their efforts,” Superintendent Kuehn said. “We congratulate all participants, and thank the local businesses who donated to the Battle of the Books event this year.”
