Community Members Invited to Vote in People’s Choice Award
TAUNTON — Superintendent John Cabral and visual art teacher Devon Borges are pleased to announce that Taunton High School’s Three Dimensional Design I class received second place in the Attleboro Arts Museum’s annual High Art Exhibition.
The Attleboro Arts Museum’s High Art Exhibition connects teens with artists both past and present, fosters the creation of original artworks and provides a
professional forum for students to voice their creativity and work collaboratively.
This year’s exhibition theme, “Dreamscapes”, features visual expressions of the surreal that are free from conscious, clear or controlled thoughts and instead focus on the articulation of imaginative visions, the bizarre of the subconscious and the beauty in the unconventional. As part of the exhibition, students from nine Massachusetts high schools collaborated with their classmates to make a canvas mural, in lieu of a sculptural installation due to COVID-19 restrictions, centered around the theme.
Taunton High students based their canvas mural idea off the board game Candy Land, a game used in the 1950s to entertain students in quarantine who were afflicted by the polio epidemic, as the history of the game mirrored students’ current experiences during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The result was candy-themed images that depicted students’ experiences in 2020. As such, reflected in their artwork is a mix of isolation, fear and sweet treats.

“The pandemic has affected everyone, but it has affected our young population in a profound way,” said Borges. “This collaborative work of art experience was an unexpected way to explore and process some of the emotions and memories of what happened this past year.”
The collaborative mural pieces are currently on exhibit both virtually and in person at the Attleboro Arts Museum, 86 Park St., Attleboro, until June 3. The virtual exhibit can be viewed here.
Community members are also encouraged to vote for Taunton High School’s mural in the Attleboro Arts Museum’s High Art 2021 People’s Choice Award. Voting for the People’s Choice Award for High Art is open now until June 3. To fill out the ballot, click here.
“I would like to congratulate our students who worked hard on this project. Collaboration and creativity are key components of an education, and they are displayed both throughout the process of creating the mural for the exhibition,” Superintendent Cabral said. “We wish them all the best for the People’s Choice Award and encourage community members to vote.”
