BEDFORD – Police Chief John Bryfonski is pleased to report that two Bedford Police Officers successfully rescued a dog that had accidentally fallen into an open septic tank.
Animal Control Officer Steven Paul and Officer Michael Heikkila were dispatched to a call on County Road about 2 p.m. on Monday, May 17. Upon arrival the officers learned that the dog had fallen into the 500-gallon tank, which was being serviced by a local company at the time.
The dog, a German Shepherd weighing about 85 pounds, was about six feet down. Officers Paul and Heikkila and the homeowner used a catch pole to pull the dog to safety.
“We were just grateful to get the dog out and cleaned up,” Officer Heikkila said.
“Officers Paul and Heikkila acted swiftly to rescue the dog from a hazardous situation,” Chief Bryfonski said. “Their actions ensured this incident ended in a happy reunion.”
Bedford Police have determined the incident was an accident and no fault of the dog’s owners. The dog has had a bath and is doing well.
