BERKLEY — Chief Scott Fournier reports that Berkley Fire Rescue responded to a basement fire earlier this afternoon.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., Berkley Fire Rescue responded to a report of a fire at 4 Ridge St.
As a result of a smoke alarm’s early detection of the fire and a dispatcher who identified early on while talking with the home owner that smoke was coming from the basement, firefighters were able to quickly determine that the fire had originated in the basement and contained it there.
Firefighters performed an aggressive interior attack from the bulk head area of the house, and had the fire under control by about 3 p.m.
Chief Fournier estimates that approximately 20% of the home was damaged due to smoke, water and fire damage. No injuries were reported.
The family residing in the home has been displaced as a result of the incident and is being assisted by family members and the Berkley Firefighters Association.
The Freetown and Raynham fire departments responded to the scene to provide mutual aid. Dighton Fire also provided station coverage.Providence Canteen 1 responded to the scene to provide water and refreshments for the first responders.
Berkley Police responded to the scene as well.
“I would like to thank our crews on a spectacular job well done,” Chief Fournier said. “Firefighting in Berkley is a hard job as we have no municipal water supply, so when we have a structure fire generally there are no hydrants around. As a result, we have to bring large amounts of water with us to battle fires.”
The fire is not believed to be suspicious at this time, and the cause remains under investigation by Berkley Fire Rescue.
