TAUNTON — Superintendent John Cabral and Police Chief Edward J. Walsh report that the Taunton Police Department is investigating after a shell casing was found on Joseph H. Martin Middle School grounds outside near the baseball fields on Friday.
At approximately 12:20 p.m., Taunton Police responded to the Martin Middle School after receiving a report that a single .40 caliber shell casing had been found near the baseball fields.
School officials immediately notified the Taunton Police Department and an on-site investigation was launched. Upon a search of the area, no other suspicious items were found.
At this time there is no reason to believe there is any active threat or danger to the school.
Students were dismissed at the regular time and in normal fashion.
“I would like to commend the student who found the shell casing and then immediately reported it to school officials, and thank Taunton Police for their quick response,” Superintendent Cabral said. “Providing a safe and secure learning environment is top priority of ours and we take these incidents very seriously.”
Added Chief Walsh, “Our School Resource Officers, along with school faculty, conducted a search of the area to ensure that there are no other items like the shell casing on school grounds, and we ask that anyone with information about this incident call the Taunton Police at508-824-7522 or contact school officials.”
The incident remains under investigation by the Taunton Police Department and Taunton Public Schools.
