CHELMSFORD — Chief James M. Spinney is pleased to announce that 14 Chelmsford Police officers were honored for their efforts above and beyond the call of duty during a ceremony on Wednesday.
Sgt. Phil Dube, Sgt. Steve Fredericks, Sgt. Steven Hawkins, Detective Sgt. Bill Carlo, Detective George Tyros, Detective Jeff Blodgett, Detective Brian Ubele, Officer Nick Ziminksy, Officer Derek Hill, Officer Christ Mauti, Officer Dave Leo, Officer Brian Richard, Officer Craig Mead and Officer Matthew Fernald were all awarded a Meritorious Award for Outstanding Performance of Duty.
“We are proud to honor these members for their incredible actions during these investigations and emergency responses,” Chief Spinney said. “They all showed exceptional professionalism and dedication while serving our community, and have proven to be invaluable assets to the department and the Town.”
Sgt. Dube, Detective Blodgett, Detective Ubele, Officer Ziminsky, Officer Hill, Officer Mauti and Officer Leo were recognized for their work during an investigation into an attempted armed home invasion on May 19, 2019. That day, officers responded to an apartment on Tyngsboro Road after a male victim was held at gunpoint by a male suspect posing as a delivery man. The suspect fled from the home and was found hiding in the nearby woods shortly after, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Sgt. Fredericks, Detective Sgt. Carlo, Detective Tyros, Officer Richard, Officer Mead and Officer Mautil were recognized for their actions on Sept. 28, 2019. On that day, police were dispatched to a home of a man who was reportedly threatening to harm himself and others with a knife. The responding officers were able to make contact with the suspect and eventually take him to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Detective Sgt. Carlo, Sgt. Hawkins, Detective Tyros and Officer Fernald were recognizing for their work arresting a murder suspect on Sept. 30, 2019. That day, Chelmsford Police assisted Lowell Police with a murder investigation that occurred in Lowell the day before. Working on a hunch, the officers search a wooded area near the Chelmsford and Lowell town lines, where they were able to find the suspect as well as evidence linked to the crime. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
Wednesday’s ceremony was originally set to be held in 2020, but was postponed until this week due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
