Additional Student Added to Program’s Waitlist
TAUNTON — Superintendent-Director Dr. Alexandre Magalhaes is pleased to announce that a Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School student has been chosen for the Broad Summer Scholars Program, and an additional student was named to the program’s waitlist.
The Broad Summer Scholars Program (BSSP) is a prestigious summer program that allows high school students with an interest in science to be matched with a Broad scientist to conduct original research projects. Areas of research can be in a range of subject areas, including cancer biology, psychiatric disease, chemical biology, computational biology, infectious disease and more.
The program allows students to explore careers within the science field while also networking with other students and researchers. BSSP participants attend scientific talks, present their research to the Broad community and attend a college fair. To apply, students must be a rising senior in high school, attend a high school within the Greater Boston area, have earned a grade of B or better in science and math classes, as well as have an excitement for science.
Bristol-Plymouth junior biotech student Adryanne Gonzalez was accepted into the Broad Summer Scholars Program for summer 2021. Junior Colby Davis was accepted to the program’s waitlist for this upcoming summer.
“Both of these students are very deserving for this program and are dedicated and hardworking,” said Kristen Aber, Bristol-Plymouth biotechnology teacher. “Adryanne is a bright and curious student who is a natural research scientist. She asks interesting questions and makes interesting observations. Colby would also make a great selection, as he is also bright and curious and understands things easily, and also puts in a lot of effort.”
Bristol-Plymouth Technical School has seen several students selected for the prestigious Broad Summer Scholars Program in recent years. Previously accepted students include:
- 2020 – Margret Philie
- 2019 – Emily Clairmont (waitlisted)
- 2018 – Mikaela Garcia
- 2017 – Taylor Emond
- 2016 – Raven Davidson
“We are excited to have another student accepted into this program and another on the waitlist, as it highlights both the incredible achievements of our students as well as the dedication and support of their teachers,” Superintendent-Director Magalhaes said. “Bristol-Plymouth Technical School has had a great history of students being accepted into this highly competitive program. Although canceled this year, we typically do a field trip to the Broad Institute every year and we maintain a very positive relationship with the program, so for our students to be recognized in this way is a great accomplishment.”
