WESTPORT — Interim Superintendent Thomas F. Aubin and Athletic Director Jason Pacheco are pleased to announce that Westport Jr./Sr. High School’s varsity boys and girls basketball teams wrapped up very successful seasons recently, with each team making it to the Mayflower Athletic Conference championship game.
The Westport boys basketball team defeated West Bridgewater 70-52 on Tuesday, Feb. 23 to claim the conference tournament title. The girls team fell to West Bridgewater 54-31 in their championship game the same night.
The boys team finished the season with a 10-2 record, cruising to their victory scoring the first 12 points of the game and having a commanding 37-24 lead at halftime. The girls team ended at 9-3, and the loss meant that West Bridgewater was the only team to defeat Westport this season (with the other two defeats including a 50-28 contest early in the season and a much closer 34-30 game a few days later).
Both boys coach Scot Boudria and girls coach Mike Ponte had to overcome the challenges of leading their teams during a highly unconventional season. Players were faced with restricted practice schedules and plenty of distractions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but each team came together at the right time to go on a championship run.
“The kids were just happy to be able to see each other and hang out, which made it hard at times for them to concentrate on the job at hand, but by the end of the year they were very focused and played to their full potential,” Coach Boudria said. “This was definitely a season like no other and I’m proud of what the students were able to achieve.”
Student athletes at Westport Jr./Sr. High School will now move on to the “Fall II” season, which is the rescheduled fall season that was postponed at the start of the year.
“This has been a very trying time for everyone, but our students have remained dedicated and committed to staying safe and working hard all year,” Athletic Director Pacheco said. “We congratulate all of our teams so far this year, and look forward to the upcoming Fall II season and beyond.”
