ROCKLAND — Superintendent Dr. Alan Cron and Rockland High School Principal Dr. John Harrison are pleased to announce that seniors Althea Olsen and Zachary Solomon will be awarded the Reuben A. and Lizzie Grossman Foundation Award.
The Reuben A. and Lizzie Grossman Foundation Award is an annual award and scholarship given to students at Rockland High School who have demonstrated service above self through exemplifying leadership ideals within the community and school.
Olsen is currently the National Honor Society Secretary and has been the recipient of both the Science and English award at Rockland High School. She is involved with writing for the school newspaper, serving as a freshman mentor and is also a member of the swim and softball teams.
Outside of school, she attended the Boston Leadership Institute for Surgical Research and also gives back to the community through volunteering. Most recently, Olsen organized a Magic School for neighbors with young children when the district went to fully remote learning.
Solomon is a member of the National Honor Society and is also involved with the music department at Rockland High School. He is involved with the Concert Band and has been a three-time recipient of the Music Achievement Award. Outside of the music department, he is a member of the cross country team, swim team and the astronomy club.
He is also an Eagle Scout, and for this honor he completed a project in the fall where he cleaned out a marching band closet and built a shelving unit that matched the pre-existing cabinets to store marching music. The second part of this project included building a rolling cart that could easily store marching band and parade music. The final part of the project was to empty a drama club storage unit and to build a large shelving unit.
“We are extremely proud of Althea and Zachary for all their hard work and also their commitment to make our school and community a better place,” Principal Harrison said. “They exemplify what it means to be a Rockland High School student and serve as role models for their fellow students. These two students are very deserving of this award, and the whole Rockland High School community congratulates them on this accomplishment.”
