WHITMAN — Superintendent Jeffery Szymaniak is pleased to announce that several art students at Whitman-Hanson Regional High School have been awarded for their recent work.
Two students were awarded at the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. Work was submitted in a range of categories, including Drawing and Illustration, Graphic Design, Painting, Photography and Printmaking. State-level awards include:
- Lucas Mitton, Grade 12, Silver Key, Faces of Obscurity (Drawing/Illustration)
- Eryka Ingram, Grade 10, Silver Key, Tiny Life (Photography)
Students Connor Gouthro and Julie Buckley also represented the region at the state level.
Additionally, students Buckley and Abby DeLory have been selected as Art All-State finalists. The two were first selected to be regional nominees representing Whitman-Hanson Regional High School. They took part in an extensive process requiring an essay, recommendations and a portfolio review.
Due to COVID-19, the projects were completed at home as part of a statewide program that links talented high school art students with professional artists, museum personnel and university professors in order to develop their skills and collaborate on community art experiences.
Students were sent boxes of supplies and asked to create work based on a self-reflective theme. The collaborative art installation is currently hanging in the Worcester Art Museum.

“I am incredibly proud of this year’s talented awardees, as each student has shown determination and skill throughout the year,” Whitman-Hanson Regional High School art instructor Christina Maher said. “The COVID-19 pandemic certainly created roadblocks, but I congratulate each student for their efforts and look forward to seeing what they come up with in the future.”
