CANTON — Superintendent Jill Rossetti is pleased to announce that Blue Hills Regional Technical School students recently repaired a flag disposal mailbox for the veterans of American Legion Braintree Post 86.
The flag disposal box, which was damaged by a snowplow, was repaired by students from three programs, including Collision Repair and Refinishing, Graphic Communications, and Metal Fabrication and Joining Technologies.
Metal Fabrication students began the process of repairing the box by replacing its legs and rain gutters. Collision Repair and Refinishing students then sand blasted the mailbox, removed the dents and followed through with the paint scheme.
Students researched and planned accordingly so the box would match the American flag with 13 red and white stripes that represent the 13 original colonies. Graphic Communication students then printed the lettering which was installed by Collision Repair students. The box was subsequently completed with a clear coat cover.
The mailbox serves as a way for the public to honor and to properly dispose of any retired American flags. The box is located at 435 Washington St. in Braintree.
As a thank you to the students for completing the project, the veterans of American Legion Braintree Post 86 generously donated $150 to the school. The donation from American Legion Braintree Post 86 was facilitated by Blue Hills alumnus and Past Commander Alfred “Al” Varasso, Commander Pedro “Pete” Vidal and John Pelose.
“We are so proud of all of our students for their hard work in repairing this box and are happy that this project will have a true impact in the community,” said Superintendent Rossetti. “We would like to thank our instructors Dwight Seaman, Chris Deady, Brad Willis, Brian Gearty, Mark Fowler and the late Matt Siwik for their guidance in helping to complete this repair and we are also grateful to the veterans of American Legion Braintree Post 86 for their thoughtful donation to the school.”
The American Legion Braintree Post 86’s $150 donation was accepted at the District School Committee meeting on Feb. 3.
