For immediate release

STONEHAM — Police Chief James McIntyre and Fire Chief Matthew Grafton report that the Stoneham Police and Fire Departments are actively responding to a hazmat incident on Franklin Street.

Stoneham Police were called to a residence on Franklin Street at 10:47 a.m. today for a report of unknown powdered narcotic found on site.

Out of an abundance of caution, Stoneham Police and Fire declared the situation a Tier 1 HazMat incident and called for additional support on scene from the State Hazardous Materials Team, which remains on scene.

Less than an ounce of the substance was discovered and removed successfully from the home.

Franklin Street is currently closed as first responders work to address the incident. A portion of Summer Street which intersects with Franklin Street is also closed.

No one has been injured in the incident.

No charges are being filed at this time and no additional information is available.
