Event Will Be Streamed on Twitch Platform This Coming Thursday
WESTPORT — Interim Superintendent Thomas F. Aubin is pleased to announce that the Westport High School Wildcats Rocket League team will be playing live against local rivals Bishop Stang High School this Thursday.
The competition will take place on Dec. 17 at 3:15 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the Wildcats’ very own Twitch channel, which can be found here. The game can be viewed on any computer or device, and will feature live commentary from fellow student-eSports athlete and announcer Michael Braga.
Rocket League is a fast-paced, soccer-like video game where players use cars to play soccer in a three-on-three match, and is a popular “eSport” competition. Since all games and practices will be played remotely, the team uses the voice-chat application Discord to communicate during games. The game runs on multiple platforms, so teammates can play on PlayStation, Xbox, or on their own computer.
Members of the Wildcats team include Ethan Garcia (captain), Luke Coelho and Adrian Gonzalez.
“This is an exciting, brand-new initiative that we’re taking at Westport High,” said co-coach Richard Monast. “ESports are becoming the ‘next big thing’ in high school and college sports, and our team is enthusiastic about competing and playing for their school.”
The team is part of a newly-founded independent eSports club at Westport High School. It is part of a much bigger movement, as eSports have grown in popularity around the world. More and more colleges are offering scholarships for eSports players, and there are an increasing number of opportunities for students to become professional gamers.
“I’m really excited for the prospects of our eSports club and their first game on Thursday,” Superintendent Aubin said. “This is a great opportunity for all Westport students to watch and cheer on a group of their peers. The students have worked hard in preparation for their season, and we encourage everyone to support our newest team.”
