HATHORNE—  Superintendent-Director Heidi Riccio Ed.D. reports that the remote Homecoming Gala to support the Catherine Larkin Memorial project will now be held on Dec. 18.

The change in date follows an announcement by the district on Sunday, Nov. 22 to pursue fully remote learning for the two weeks following Thanksgiving break out of an abundance of caution to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Students will commence remote learning on Monday, Nov. 30 and will return to their hybrid schedules on Monday, Dec. 14. To read more about the decision, click here.

Superintendent Riccio is pleased to share that Sen. Joan B. Lovely will also be giving opening remarks at the gala, which will feature an overview of the history of Essex Tech.

The annual gala raises funds to support Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical School’s Catherine Larkin Memorial Cottage building project, and was initially scheduled for Friday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.

The gala will now be held remotely on Friday, Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.

Tickets to the Virtual Larkin Gala are still available for $25 per person. Complete dinners for the Gala will be prepared by the school’s Culinary Department and are also available for purchase for $25 per dinner. Dinners will be available for pick-up at the entrance of Essex Tech’s campus between 3-5 p.m. on the day of the event.

To purchase tickets and meals for the event, click here. Information on attending the remotely held gala will be shared with participants via email following their registration for the event. The deadline to purchase tickets is Thursday, Dec. 17.

The Larkin Lifetime Achievement Award will be given at the gala, which recognizes members of the Essex Tech community who have demonstrated a commitment to and achievement within the local vocational and/or agricultural industries. To nominate someone for the honor, click here. The deadline to nominate someone for the award is Friday, Nov. 27.

The gala will also feature a virtual auction, with items created by students in Essex Tech’s technical programs. The auction is live now, and to participate, click here. Items in the auction include a brick pizza oven, Hawk Holiday tree, corn hole boards, Adirondack chairs, a holiday wreath, a handwoven shawl, a day of golf, and more.

The original Larkin Memorial Cottage on Essex Tech’s campus was built in 1950 and shortly thereafter was named after Lt. Catherine Larkin, an alumni of the Essex County Agricultural School homemaking program and World War II nurse who died in a plane crash in 1945.

The cottage is being rebuilt into a multi-use facility, including a historical museum, service kitchen, office space, an exhibit hall, a learning lab and function space. Funds from the gala will support the rebuilding project.

In order to fully fund the building project, Essex Tech needs to raise approximately $650,000 in additional donations.
