For immediate release

MELROSE— The Melrose Police Department and the MBTA are advising residents to avoid the area of West Emerson Street near the train tracks this weekend while the tracks are being replaced.

Part of West Emerson Street will be fully closed from Friday night through Sunday, but area businesses — as well as the Cedar Park station parking lot — will remain open and police will be on site to help motorists navigate.

WHEN:

  • Beginning tonight from 8 p.m. through Sunday evening, the affected area of West Emerson Street will be fully closed.

WHERE:

  • West Emerson Street from Tremont Street to Vinton Street

WHO:

  • Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Keolis
  • Melrose Police Department

WHAT:

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Keolis will be replacing the train tracks in the West Emerson Street area this weekend. Minor disruption to traffic in the area began on Thursday, and the entire street from Tremont to Vinton Streets will be closed this weekend to allow for the tracks to be replaced.

MBTA Keolis will be providing all detour signage in the area to support traffic, which will be detoured at Tremont Street to the Fellsway. Eastbound traffic will be detoured at Vinton Street to the Fellsway.

Signage stating “businesses open” will be located on West Emerson Street at Vinton Street, and customers will be allowed into the area via the Vinton Street side of the road. A Melrose Police officer will be posted on detail in the area at all times to allow access.

Melrose Police details will also be located at Tremont Street, at Vinton Street and at Cedar Park.

A representative from the MBTA has also been made available this week to speak with all businesses and homeowners affected, and has informed them of the scope of the project.

The Cedar Park Depot lot will also remain open and accessible at Vinton Street to Cedar Park.
