Superintendent Curtis-Whipple to Accept Non-Profit Sector Position

WEYMOUTH — The Weymouth School Committee announces that Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple will be stepping down from her position in February and that she has accepted a non-profit sector position that will keep her in the educational field.

Superintendent Curtis-Whipple submitted her resignation to the School Committee on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and will be leaving the district on Feb. 26, 2021, the last business day of the month.

The School Committee will begin the process of searching for a new superintendent immediately. The School Committee will notify the public of the first steps at upcoming meetings and keep families and residents informed throughout the process.

Superintendent Curtis-Whipple has served as leader of the district since 2016. She has been an employee of the Weymouth Public Schools since 1995 and previously served as assistant superintendent of instructional services and support from 2014 to 2016 and Academy Avenue Primary School principal from 2010 to 2014. She has also worked as a teacher, literacy coordinator and special education instructor within the district.

During that time, she is credited with garnering multiple grants and donations, and fostering collaborations with many community stakeholders. During her tenure, she reorganized the central office, oversaw curriculum specific oversight including the addition of adjustment counselors and content specific coaches, and created alternative pathway options for students needing social emotional or academic support.

Superintendent Curtis-Whipple also collaborated with the Greater Boston Food Bank to create the Weymouth Market, cooperatively wrote the application/statement of interest in 2015 for the Maria Weston Chapman MSBA project and collaboratively supported the Reebok BOKS program to expand across all primary schools.

“Weymouth will be hard-pressed to find another superintendent who cares as much about the students, staff, families and Weymouth community as Jen Curtis-Whipple does,” School Committee Chairwoman Lisa Belmarsh said. “We are sad to lose a leader who brings genuine positivity, energy, intelligence and work ethic to our community, but we will immediately begin the search for a new permanent superintendent who will ensure the Weymouth Public Schools continues its march forward uninterrupted. On behalf of the entire school committee, I offer my sincere gratitude to Superintendent Curtis-Whipple and wish her best of luck in her next chapter.”

In her departure letter to the school committee, Superintendent Curtis-Whipple said she was honored to work with such “dedicated educators, administrators, health staff, custodians, maintenance workers, drivers, monitors, food service workers, behavioral  health staff, career and technical education staff, IT staff, administrative assistants, education support professionals, elected officials, support organizations, community partners, and amazing families working to better the educational experience of our students each and every day.”

“The decision to leave has been difficult,” Superintendent Curtis-Whipple said, “but today more than ever I need to devote more time to my own children, family, and the opportunities presented to me to grow personally and professionally. I look forward to this new professional opportunity and I am thrilled that the position allows me to continue to work with Weymouth families.”
