EAST BRIDGEWATER — Fire Chief Timothy Harhen and Police Chief Paul O’Brien will be hosting a live-streamed remembrance ceremony this week to commemorate the 19th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, while also adhering to social distancing guidelines.

To watch the ceremony on Facebook Live, visit the fire department’s Facebook page at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11.

Typically, the department hosts public safety and town officials, state representatives and members of the community for a ceremony to honor those who lost their lives during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the department will still host the ceremony with a smaller group present, but will not be inviting members of the public to attend in person.

Instead, all are welcome to view the live-streamed ceremony.

“We would like to remember and honor those who lost their lives protecting us on Sept. 11, 2001, including both innocent civilians and the brave police officers, firefighters and other first responders,” Chief Harhen said. “We would especially like to recognize U.S. Secret Service Master Special Officer Craig J. Miller, an East Bridgewater native, who lost his life in his attempt to save others. Their bravery on that day will never be forgotten. In absence of a larger in-person ceremony, our department will alternatively pay our respects in a privately held ceremony, but we encourage everyone to view the ceremony via Facebook.”

The event will include the lowering of the American flag to half-mast, a moment of silence and clergy members will be present for an invocation and benediction.

“Even in the midst of an ongoing pandemic, it is important to take time to honor the lives lost on 9/11,” Chief O’Brien said. “The live-stream is an opportunity for residents to join us in remembering those who were lost while adhering to local health guidelines.”
