EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief Timothy Harhen reports that the East Bridgewater Fire Department responded to a basement fire at a multi-family home Monday afternoon.
At approximately 12:47 p.m., East Bridgewater firefighters responded to 441 Summer St. for a report of a fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the basement of the home. The 13 residents who were home at the time of the fire were able to safely evacuate before firefighters arrived.
No one was injured in the fire.
The fire was extinguished by 1 p.m. The basement sustained significant fire and water damage, and the home is currently inhabitable. In all, six adults and nine children are temporarily displaced, and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
The West Bridgewater and Bridgewater Fire Departments also responded to the scene, while the Whitman Fire Department provided station coverage for the East Bridgewater Fire Department.
The initial investigation indicates that the fire is not suspicious. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the East Bridgewater Fire Department.
