GEORGETOWN – Georgetown Fire Chief Fred Mitchell and Police Chief

Donald C. Cudmore announce that the annual Sept.11, 2001 Remembrance Ceremony has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

“This decision was made in the interest of the health and wellbeing of all involved, for both residents and public staff,” Chief Cudmore said. “We encourage residents to remember and recognize this important date on their own, in a socially distant, responsible manor. We’d also like to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation– this decision has not been made lightly.”

The annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony would have marked the 19th anniversary observance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. Traditionally, Georgetown’s Police and Fire Departments are joined by local clergy in an annual ceremony to remember the Sept. 11 attacks. The event includes prayers led by the clergy and a moment of silence for those who were lost.

“The Georgetown Fire and Police Departments fully understand how meaningful and important this annual ceremony is to our community,” Chief Mitchell said. “It is with heavy hearts that we cancel this year’s ceremony, but we look forward to being able to come together and remember this day, and properly honor all those who lost their lives in these attacks, next year.”
