DRACUT — Acting Chief Stephen D. Chaput reports that the Dracut Police Department has responded to an increased amount of car break-ins in recent months, and is urging residents to take precautions to protect their vehicles and belongings.

Over the course of July and August, Dracut Police responded to about 60 cases all over town in which vehicles were broken into and items stolen from inside. In most of the cases, vehicles were left unlocked.

“The simplest thing you can do to prevent theft from your vehicle is to lock your doors when leaving it unattended,” Chief Chaput said. “Many times, criminals will just try to open a car door and — if its unlocked — go into it and steal any valuables that may have been left inside. Locking your car doors may be all it takes to stop them.”

In addition to locking their vehicles, the Dracut Police Department urges residents to avoid leaving valuables inside an unattended vehicle — especially in plain sight. The department also encourages residents to park their vehicles in well-lit areas and, if they have them, monitor personal security cameras for any suspicious activity.

The car break-ins remain under active investigation by the Dracut Police Department, and anyone who believes they may have information that could help detectives solve them is asked to call the department at 978-957-2123.
