AMESBURY — Amesbury Fire Chief Kenneth E. Berkenbush and Deputy Chief James Nolan report that the Amesbury Fire Department responded after a truck struck the Bailey Bridge on Main Street.
Police and fire units were dispatched to the bridge at 10:42 a.m. Thursday for a report of a stuck tractor-trailer truck. Upon arrival, rescuers found an orange tractor-trailer truck registered to Medallion Trucking LLC stuck under the bridge’s superstructure.
No injures were reported. Newburyport Towing and Edgemont Towing responded to safely remove the truck from the roadway. Main Street was closed at the Bridge in both directions and is expected to remain closed until at least 3 p.m.
The Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (Truck Team) responded to the scene as well as the Amesbury Department of Public Works.
The Merrimac Fire Department responded to cover Amesbury during the incident.
The Bailey Bridge has a clearance of 10’3″ and is clearly marked with signage. Despite this, multiple too-tall trucks have struck the bridge over the years. Chief Berkenbush reminds motorists to always observe and abide by roadway signs, including signage for height restrictions on bridges.
The incident remains under investigation by the Amesbury Police Department.
