PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association mourns the death of longtime East Greenwich Police Officer Sgt. Christopher Callan.
On Saturday, July 18, Sgt. Callan died from injuries he sustained during a skydiving accident while working with the Rhode Island Army National Guard. Sgt. Callan served the East Greenwich Police Department for 15 years.
“We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the East Greenwich community following this terrible tragedy,” said Chief Sidney Wordell (Ret.) Executive Director of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs’ Association. “Sgt. Callan bravely served his community and country in multiple capacities. He is a hero who will be missed, but his actions and memory will never be forgotten.”
Sgt. Callan was an experienced skydiver and served as the jump master for the National Guard’s annual Leapfest competition at the University of Rhode Island.
Additionally, during his distinguished military career, Callan served as a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces Green Berets and served numerous tours of duty overseas. Throughout his military and police service, Sgt. Callan developed and maintained an extensive network of friends and colleagues worldwide.

Callan during this extremely difficult time,” said Lincoln Police Chief and RIPCA President Brian Sullivan. “Our prayers and support are with the men and women of the East Greenwich Police Department as we collectively mourn the loss of Sgt. Callan.”
Sgt. Callan is survived by his three children, as well as his parents and two sisters.
The Rhode Island National Guard will announce funeral arrangements once they are finalized.
