HOLBROOK — Chief William J. Smith announces that retired K-9 Bo was honored by the Holbrook Police Department with a “final walk” before being put to rest at the Holbrook Animal Hospital today following a brief battle with cancer.
Members of the Holbrook Police Department and nearby law enforcement agencies lined Plymouth Street outside the hospital and saluted Bo as he drove up to the hospital in recognition of his service to the department.
Bo retired from duty in August 2019 following over six years of service with the Holbrook Police Department. Bo was partnered with Officer Joshua Knowlton and had lived with Officer Knowlton and his family since his retirement.
Bo was diagnosed with cancer at the age of nine.
Officer Knowlton and Bo were Holbrook’s first K-9 team. Bo was a German Shepherd who came to Holbrook Police from the Netherlands. He graduated from a 16-week training course and began his duty in April 2013.
Bo was a certified patrol dog. He was trained in human search and tracking, evidence searching, criminal apprehension and crowd control. In his time with the department, Bo assisted officers in arresting a suspect wanted for robbery and assault of a police officer. Bo also responded to many calls to assist neighboring police departments in need of a K-9. Notably, he helped Abington Police locate a suicidal female who was hiding near an apartment complex.
“Bo was a valuable member of the Holbrook Police Department for many years,” Chief Smith said. “He was well liked and respected not only by the men and women of our department, but also by residents of the Holbrook community and the officers from the neighboring departments he worked with over the years. He will be missed, and our condolences go out to Officer Knowlton and his family.”
