HOLBROOK — The following is a statement from Chief William Smith regarding the upcoming planned rally and vigil for George Floyd in the Town of Holbrook:
“The Town of Holbrook and the Holbrook Police Department has been made aware of a planned rally and vigil for George Floyd in the Town on Sunday. We would like to inform all residents that the Holbrook Police Department will be fully staffed and operational during the event.
“We condemn the actions of the police officers in Minneapolis. The community of Holbrook is an open and inclusive place for all, and we applaud those who have the courage to stand up and speak out against racial injustices both locally and around the world. While this is an event not sponsored by the Town of Holbrook, we respect and support the rights of free speech and assembly granted to each and every citizen of this country.
“The Holbrook Police Department is committed to protecting and serving everyone in our community. We understand many of our community members and business owners have concerns over this event taking place. We have met with event organizers and Town officials to discuss the concerns that have been voiced.
“We want to reassure everyone that we are taking the necessary steps and precautions to ensure that people can participate in a peaceful rally and vigil while remaining safe. We support peaceful first amendment rights. With that being said, we will not support or condone the actions of those who wish to disrupt the peaceful rally and vigil taking place with violence.”
