WHITMAN — The following is a statement from Whitman Town Administrator Frank Lynam, Police Chief Timothy Hanlon and Fire Chief Timothy Grenno.

“The Town of Whitman has been made aware of a planned protest in the Town on Sunday afternoon. We would like to inform all residents that the Whitman Police Department will be fully staffed and operational during the event. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of all of our residents and all those who enter our town.

“We understand and acknowledge the concerns that are shared by many of our residents and business owners over this event taking place. While this is an event not sponsored by the Town of Whitman, we respect the rights of free speech and assembly granted to each and every citizen of this country.

“The Whitman Police Department has a responsibility to provide for public safety. We have met with the organizers of this event to discuss several concerns that Town officials have, as well as those that have been echoed by concerned residents and business owners. Please know that the Town is taking every precaution necessary to ensure this event is as safe as possible for all those involved.”
