WRENTHAM — Superintendent Paul Zinni, Athletic Director Gary Brown and Varsity Head Football Coach Brian Lee are pleased to share that King Philip High School Football has earned a spot on the list of MaxPreps’ Top 20 Most Dominant Massachusetts High School Football Programs of Last Decade.
King Philip Football ranked fifth on the top 20 list. The rankings are determined by MaxPreps, a platform for nationwide high school sports news and rankings.
Football programs across the state were ranked based on:
- Top 25 finishes in the MaxPreps state computer rankings (25 points awarded to the No. 1 team, 24 for No. 2 and so on).
- Top 25 finishes in the MaxPreps national computer rankings (50 points for No. 1, 49 for No. 2 and so on).
- State championships (20 points)
- State championship game appearances (10 points)
Based on this point system, King Philip Football scored 191 points. In the past decade, King Philip has two state championship wins, in 2016 (1A) and in 2017 (D2); was state runner-up in 2018 (D2); and finished 21st in the state’s top 25 in 2010, 10th in 2011, sixth in 2012, 14th in 2013, sixth in 2014, sixth in 2016, fourth in 2017, 13th in 2018 and 13th in 2019.
King Philip Football won its first ever state championship in 2016 by defeating Reading 21-18 in the Division IA State Championship game, also finishing the 2016 season undefeated. The team won its second straight state championship in 2017 in Division II against Lincoln-Sudbury. The 2017 championship was King Philip’s 25th straight win and ended Lincoln-Sudbury’s win streak.
King Philip ended the 2019 season with a 14-0 win against Franklin. The team went 8-3 in the 2019 season.
“King Philip Football has had an unforgettable decade with our program’s first two state championship titles and many other memorable moments,” Athletic Director Brown said. “This ranking represents the hard work and passion of all of the student-athletes over the past 10 years, and the dedication of our team’s coaching staff. Congratulations to them all.”
King Philip Football is coached by Brian Lee, who has been the team’s head coach since 2005.
