DEDHAM — Town Manager Leon Goodwin and Police Chief Michael D’Entremont strongly denounce the recent actions taken by Minneapolis Police officers that led to the tragic death of George Floyd and join in the collective mourning that is being felt across the country this week as a result of his death.
“As police officers, no matter where you are in the country, or the world for that matter, our mantra is to save lives and protect those that we are sworn to serve. That includes the lives of those that we are detaining or placing under arrest, who are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” Chief D’Entremont said. “The actions taken by Minneapolis police officers in the death of George Floyd should be condemned and in no way represent the hundreds of thousands of police officers that put on their uniforms every day across the country to do their jobs with the utmost integrity and professionalism, including the members of the Dedham Police Department.”
Members of the Dedham Police Department undergo training on de-escalation techniques, mental health, diversity and inclusion, fair and impartial policing and police legitimacy. This includes advanced training through the Police Executive Research Forum entitled “Integrating Communications, Assessment, and Tactics” or ICAT.
“In Dedham, our police department takes a very proactive approach toward comprehensive training for all officers and community outreach,” said Town Manager Goodwin. “That is why it was so troubling to hear of the actions taken by members of the Minneapolis Police Department that led to the tragic and senseless death of George Floyd. The video of his death is extremely disturbing. To hear that one of the police officers involved has been arrested today is hopefully the first step towards justice and healing this terrible wound that has been torn open. We hope that Mr. Floyd’s family and loved ones can take solace in knowing that they are not alone in their outrage and our entire community offers its deepest condolences for their loss.”
While the town leaders decry the serious injustice that has taken place, violent protests including the burning of the police station in Minneapolis overnight Thursday must also be denounced. Town leaders encourage residents to use this moment for productive dialogue and respectful action.
“The pain and anger coming out of Minnesota this week is very hard to see and it is unimaginable what emotions and feelings many of their residents are going through right now,” Town Manager Goodwin said. “With that said, now is the time for conversation and dialogue in order for their community to begin to pick up the pieces and while we continue to work to ensure every Dedham resident feels safe and respected.”
