EASTON — Chief Kevin Partridge is pleased to announce that members of the Easton Fire Department assisted a mother and her newborn after she gave birth in her home on Sunday evening.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, the Easton Fire Department responded to a call at a Turnpike Street home for a report of a woman who was in labor. A short time later, prior to the Easton Fire Department’s arrival, the mother, Kaylee Sims, gave birth in her home.
Sims gave birth to a health baby girl, Elizabeth Marie Stappen, weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces, when Paramedic Jeff Dupuis and Lt. Jon Carroll arrived on Engine 12. Kaylee’s mother, Michelle, and father, Robert, a local paramedic, assisted her in the delivery.
At the home, Paramedic Dupuis and Lt. Carroll assessed the baby to make sure she was breathing properly and was warm and cleaned her off while they waited for the ambulance to arrive.
Once the ambulance arrived, the responding medics cut the baby’s umbilical cord. Easton Fire paramedics then treated the healthy mother and newborn and transported the two to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. Both were later released and are doing well.
On Monday, May 4, the Easton Fire Department dropped off diapers for the newborn.
“We are extremely proud of Dupuis and Carroll for their outstanding job on scene,” said Chief Partridge. “Their professionalism, knowledge, training and quick responses ensured that the mother and baby were safe after the unanticipated birth and while awaiting transport to the hospital. They did an outstanding job, and I am extremely proud.”
Paramedic Dupuis and Lt. Caroll will receive pink stork pins for their efforts on the call.
