RAYMOND, N.H. — Despite the closure of school buildings in the district, Lamprey River Elementary School (LRES) students celebrated Earth Day last week by completing environmentally conscious activities and projects while learning from home.
On Wednesday, April 22, students took part in a variety of screen free activities, such as building a bird feeder, cleaning up trash, playing outside or planting a garden in order to celebrate the 50th annual Earth Day. Students shared photos and videos with classmates to show them what they were doing as well.
Kindergarten students held their celebration throughout the entire week, learning about the Earth during their virtual science classes.
This was the second year that LRES students have participated in a school-wide Earth Day event.
“We wanted to think of a way that we could continue to keep the Earth Day lessons alive while students are learning remotely,” said Principal Laura Yacek. “Earth Day fell on a Wednesday, which is when we would normally plan for screen free activities, so the timing was perfect to recommend at-home activities for our students, and have them share how they take care of our Earth.”
Abbey Samsel, a library and media specialist for the school, brainstormed ideas of how students could celebrate and shared them with LRES families.
“I’m incredibly proud of students and their families for celebrating this important day while learning from home,” said Superintendent Tina McCoy. “Over the last few months students, their families and teachers have done a great job transitioning to the changes and challenges that come from remote learning, and this is a great example of their commitment to their learning both in and out of the classroom.”
