BRAINTREE — Mayor Charles C. Kokoros would like to inform residents that, per recently signed state legislation, the Town is extending the due date for several categories of tax and other Town bills in response to COVID-19.
In accordance with the Act to Address Challenges Faced by Municipalities and State Authorities Resulting from COVID-19, signed on Friday, April 3, Mayor Kokoros is exercising the option made available by the legislation to extend the due dates of the following bills:
Fourth Quarter Real Estate and Personal Property Tax Bills:
- Original Due Date: May 1, 2020
- New Due Date: June 1, 2020
Motor Vehicle Excise Taxes:
- Any bills issued with a due date of March 10, 2020, or later are now due on June 1, 2020, regardless of the due date printed on the bill.
Water, Sewer and Stormwater Utility Bills:
- Any bills issued with a due date of March 10, 2020, or later are now due on June 1, 2020, regardless of the due date printed on the bill.
Property Tax Personal Exemption and Tax Deferral Applications:
- Original Due Date: April 1, 2020
- Extended Due Date: June 1, 2020
In addition, Mayor Kokoros is waiving interest and other penalties in the event of a late payment of any real estate, personal property, motor vehicle excise, water, sewer or stormwater utility bill for an additional month. This gives Braintree taxpayers until June 30, 2020, to make the payment without incurring interest or other penalties.
Under the new state legislation, payments made after June 30 will be subject to interest and penalties back to the due date of June 1.
“We know that many people’s lives have been disrupted by these unprecedented and challenging times, and we are pleased that this legislation assists us with providing flexibility in a range of financial matters,” Mayor Kokoros said.
