MIDDLEBOROUGH – Chief Joseph Perkins reports that the Middleborough Police Department arrested a man yesterday who allegedly crashed his motor vehicle, fled the scene on foot and then broke into a nearby home over the weekend.
MARK KENNEDY, AGE 40, OF HALIFAX is charged with:
- Breaking and Entering into a Building in the Nighttime (Felony)
- Breaking and Entering into a Vehicle/Boat in the Nighttime (Felony)
- Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Revoked License
- Leaving the Scene of a Crash After Causing Property Damage
- Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle
At approximately 9:15 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 22, Middleborough Police responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on Summer Street. Upon arrival, officers located a Hyundai Sonata that had crashed into a tree. The driver was not at the scene.
While officers were investigating the crash, police received a report of a person breaking into a home on Summer Street, approximately a quarter of a mile away from the crash scene. Upon arrival to the home, officers conducted a search of the residence but could not locate the suspect.
The Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit and Massachusetts Environmental Police were called to assist Middleborough Police in ground and aerial searches for the suspect. After a two-hour search, officers were unable to locate the suspect.
Through the subsequent investigation, evidence found at both scenes led police to identify KENNEDY as the alleged driver of the vehicle and the suspect in the residential break-in. It is believed that KENNEDY broke into the garage of the home in order to attempt to gain access to a vehicle inside. He was unsuccessful in accessing the vehicle before he fled from the home.
Middleborough Police subsequently secured an arrest warrant for KENNEDY. On Monday, Feb. 25, with the assistance of the Halifax Police Department, detectives executed the warrant at a home in Halifax where KENNEDY was residing.
KENNEDY was placed under arrest without incident and was transported to Wareham District Court to be arraigned. Prior to his arraignment, KENNEDY was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries believed to have been sustained in the crash.
KENNEDY was later released from the hospital on $190 bail and is expected to be arraigned at Wareham District Court today.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
