WESTPORT – Superintendent Gary Reese and Principal Cheryl Greeson are pleased to share that students at the Alice A. Macomber School participated in Global School Play Day last week.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, Macomber participated in its second annual play day. The event first launched in 2015, with around 65,000 students participating. This year, more than 500,000 students from schools in 75 countries were signed up for the day.

The day is meant to encourage play among students that involves no structure or organization by adults. Teachers are encouraged to supervise the play but to allow students the freedom to choose the play activities that most appeal to them.

Macomber teachers were told they could encourage as many hours of play that they wanted, and most teachers had their students play all day.

Students were allowed to bring in toys, games, blocks or dolls to play with and share with their friends, as well as play with the toys teachers had in the classrooms. No screens were allowed as part of the play day. Some of the activities, games and toys Macomber students enjoyed during the day included painting, puzzles, UNO, Monopoly, Operation, Chutes and Ladders, Candy Land, Play-Doh, coloring and more.

“Global School Play Day is such a great initiative because so many kids now are using technology at earlier ages, and they just don’t play board games or do creative activities as much as they used to,” Principal Greeson said. “It was great to see the students taking part in different activities and games and connecting with their classmates over playtime throughout the day.”
