Poetry Out Loud is a national organization funded by the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. The nationwide competition is designed to help students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about literary history and contemporary life through the memorization and performance of poems.
High school students first competed in their classrooms before going on to school-wide and district-wide levels.
Guest judges score participants using the Poetry Out Loud competition rubric in order to determine the winner.
From there, chosen students will go on to compete in the Regional Semi-Finals on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Rochester Opera House, 31 Wakefield St. The regional winners will then compete at the N.H. State Finals Championship at the N.H. State House, 107 North Main St.
Finalists from the state championship will compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Championship in Washington, D.C. from April 27-29.
Since 2005, Poetry Out Loud has grown to reach more than 3.8 million students and 60,000 teachers from 16,000 schools in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
