SHREWSBURY — Chief James Vuona is pleased to announce that the Shrewsbury Fire Department has launched a community risk reduction program in fire prevention for residents in need of assistance.
The Shrewsbury Fire Department was one of two communities in the Commonwealth to be awarded funding by a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Federal Fire Prevention & Safety Grant for this type of home based fire safety program.
The program will provide free smoke detector installations and home safety assessments for Shrewsbury residents. Home safety assessments will include the checking of fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are in good working order and properly placed throughout the home. Non-compliant alarms and detectors will be replaced by Shrewsbury’s firefighters and the new equipment will be provided at no cost to residents. The safety assessments will also include information on home escape plans, clear escape paths and cooking and electrical safety recommendations.
The program aims to improve residential fire safety for Shrewsbury residents and their families, and for potential high-risk demographics such as children, senior citizens, individuals with limited English proficiency and individuals that may require additional assistance.
“We know that properly installed and fully-functioning smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors save lives in the case of an emergency,” Chief Vuona said. “We’re excited to be starting this initiative to help our residents be safe in their homes and to get out into the community to promote fire education and important fire safety practices. We are basically asking residents to reach out and help us, help you.”
Residents can learn more about the program by visiting the Shrewsbury Fire Department’s website or by viewing a Public Service Announcement.
Residents who would like to request an alarm installation or home safety assessment services can complete the Service Request Form.
