READING — Deputy Chief David Clark is pleased to announce that the Reading Police Department will be hosting a four-part Rape Aggression and Defense (R.A.D.) course starting in March.
The program is designed to teach women personal safety skills, and includes lesson in awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and progresses to hands-on physical defense techniques.
“While we hope they’re never needed, these self defense tactics can ultimately make the difference in helping protect women should they need to defend themselves in the event of an attack,” Deputy Chief Clark said. “I encourage all women in the community who are interested to participate.”
WHEN:
- Tuesday, March 24 from 6-9 p.m.
- Thursday, March 26 from 6-9 p.m.
- Tuesday, March 31 from 6-9 p.m.
- Thursday, April 2 from 6-10 p.m.
WHERE:
To be announced, but the classes will be held in Reading.
WHAT:
Participants in the general R.A.D. program will learn a wide range of tactics, including how to avoid confrontations, escape from a scene and defend themselves during an attack. At the end of both courses, women will have the opportunity to practice their skills in realistic simulation exercises.
The course is broken up into four parts and those who sign-up should plan on attending all parts. The course is free of charge and will be held in Reading.
Those interested in signing up or who have questions about the course can call 781-942-6761 or email Community Service Officer Kristen O’Shaughnessy at KOShaughnessy@ci.reading.ma.us.
