DIGHTON — Town Administrator Mallory Aronstein is pleased to announce that the Town of Dighton has recently been awarded a Complete Streets grant from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (DOT).

On Thursday, Jan. 16, Town Administrator Aronstein received notice that the town would be awarded a $277,442 grant. The grant will fund the Center Street sidewalks, the Pearl Street crosswalk and walkway improvements and the installation of bicycle signage throughout the town.

In addition to the grant, the Town of Dighton has committed town funds for surveying, planning documentation and easements. Funds from a special article at the fall 2019 Town Meeting have been procured for the project.

“Grants such as this one allow small towns to have the funds necessary to make repairs and upgrades to infrastructure,” said Town Administrator Aronstein. “Sidewalks, in particular, are in high demand and are very expensive. Having these funds will give us the opportunity to build pedestrian-friendly roadways while removing the financial burden from taxpayers.”

The goal of the Complete Streets initiative is to make streets and streetscapes more appealing, greener, smarter and able to safely accommodate a variety of transportation modes, including bicyclists and pedestrian activity.

The Town of Dighton is currently preparing to schedule these construction projects. The town plans to begin installing signage while simultaneously working on the construction projects. Drivers should expect delays as construction begins.

For more information on the Complete Streets grant and project, please contact Dighton Highway Superintendent Tom Ferry at [email protected]
