Open Burning Season Begins Jan. 15
RANDOLPH – Chief Richard Donovan and the Randolph Fire Department announce that the State Open Burning Season begins today and will end on Friday, May 1.
Burning permits from previous years do not carry over. All residents need to re-apply for permits and can do so by visiting the Randolph Fire station, 10 Memorial Parkway, to fill out the required paperwork. The permits are free.
Permission to burn must be obtained from the department for each day of burning by calling 781-961-0991. If burning is permitted for that day, callers will give their permit number to the dispatcher.
Burning must begin between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and all fires must be extinguished by 4 p.m. Burning must be done at least 75 feet away from buildings and be attended to at all times. Complete rules for burning are included on the burning permit.
Outdoor burning is only permitted for brush. Burning of brush and trees from commercial land clearing operations is prohibited. Burning of leaves, grass, hay, stumps, building debris and tires is prohibited as well.
Violations of the permit requirements, open burning law and/or open burning regulations will be grounds for permit revocation. According to Massachusetts law, anyone found burning without a permit may be subject to criminal charges, the punishment for which is a fine of up to $500, plus the cost of suppression, or by imprisonment for up to one month, or both.
