Open Burning Season Begins Jan. 15
DIGHTON – Chief Christopher Maguy would like to announce that the State Open Burning Season will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and run through Friday, May 1.
Residents who need to apply for a permit are asked to come to the Dighton Fire station, 300 Main St., to fill out the required paperwork.
Residents who wish to acquire a permit will be required to pay a $10 fee. The fee may be paid for by a personal check or money order payable to the Town of Dighton.
Residents who have already obtained permits need to call 508-669-6611 on the day they wish to burn.
If burning is not allowed that day, the on duty personnel will say so.
Residents should not call before 10 a.m. to obtain permission to burn. Residents may burn from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. but will not be permitted to begin burning after 2 p.m.
Outdoor burning is only permitted for brush and tree limbs. Burning must be done at least 75 feet away from buildings and be attended to at all times.
Violations of the permit requirements, open burning law and/or open burning regulations will be grounds for permit revocation. According to Massachusetts law, anyone found burning without a permit may be subject to criminal charges, the punishment for which is a fine of up to $500, plus the cost of suppression, or by imprisonment for up to one month, or both.
