WEYMOUTH — Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple is pleased to announce that Massachusetts Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Jeffrey C. Riley, along with other state education leaders, will be visiting the Chapman Middle School in Weymouth next week.

Weymouth Middle School, Chapman Campus, 1051 Commercial St., Weymouth
WHAT:
Commissioner Riley, along with Massachusetts Secretary of Education James Peyser, Senior Associate Commissioner for Instructional Support Heather Peske and Department of Education STEM Director Erin Hashimoto-Martell, will be arriving at Chapman Middle School at approximately 9:30 a.m. The purpose of the visit is to learn more about the OpenSciEd program.
Massachusetts is one of ten states currently partnering with the nonprofit organization OpenSciEd, which supplies instructional science materials and supports instructional science units at the middle school level. Weymouth Public Schools joined the state’s pilot group last year in seventh and eighth grades.
Commissioner Riley and the group will be observing classroom instruction in the OpenSciEd program and speaking with teachers to get feedback on the program as a part of the development process. They will begin by visiting the classroom of eighth grade science teacher Amanda Thompson.
They will then greet and speak with teachers before visiting the classroom of seventh grade science teacher Charles Hickey.
The visit will conclude with a short question-and-answer session and closing remarks, from approximately 10:25-10:30.
