Weymouth Public Schools Continues to See Success with Weymouth Food Market
WEYMOUTH — Superintendent Jennifer Curtis-Whipple is pleased to share that the Weymouth Market hosted by Weymouth Public Schools has seen continued success over the past two years and is now serving over 400 local families.
The Weymouth Market is typically held on the first Wednesday of each month from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Weymouth High School. Those who attend are given free food and other items supplied by the Greater Boston Food Bank and Cradles to Crayons.
The next Weymouth Market event will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
“Weymouth Public Schools has been extremely fortunate to work with the Greater Boston Food Bank to help reduce food insecurity in our community and I am proud that we are now able to serve so many Weymouth families through the program,” Superintendent Curtis-Whipple said. “In addition to food items, other items like shoes, jackets, diapers and books are supplied through the generosity of Cradles to Crayons. We are deeply grateful for these partnerships and it has been fantastic to see the market grow to serve those in need.”
Superintendent Curtis-Whipple began working with Greater Boston Food Bank in the fall of 2017 to create a plan for providing a free monthly food market in town. Now two years later, the Weymouth Market not only provides food and other supplies for hundreds of families but also provides opportunities for volunteers at the high school who have collected coats to distribute at the market to anyone in need.
Weymouth Public Schools staff members from each school in the district also volunteer at the market, including administrators, educators, custodians and more.
“The market has created a real sense of community, as many staff from town offices volunteer, as do members of the community,” Superintendent Curtis-Whipple said. “Annmarie Coyle of the Weymouth Food Pantry also volunteers with us each month. We could not hold the market without everyone’s generous support.”
All residents of Weymouth are welcome at the Weymouth Market. Guests are asked to bring a reusable grocery bag.
