Carlisle Police Arrest Man in Connection with Alleged Mail Theft
CARLISLE – On Wednesday, Dec. 18, Carlisle Police arrested ANTHONY O. UNAKA, 53, OF RANDOLPH in connection with allegedly stealing mail from multiple Carlisle homes. UNAKA was arraigned Thursday, Dec. 19 in Concord District Court on charges of larceny under $1,200, receiving stolen property and possession of a Class E drug.
On Wednesday, at around 2 p.m. a Carlisle citizen noticed a man taking mail out of their mailbox on River Road shortly after it was delivered. They called the Carlisle Police Department immediately to report the incident. Officer Paul Smith was on patrol and noticed a vehicle and operator, later identified as UNAKA, matching the victim’s description a short distance from the home. Following a roadside investigation, the defendant was arrested for allegedly stealing the mail. Investigators subsequently located a large amount of mail from several homes, 19 gift cards and prescription pills that did not belong to the defendant.
During the investigation it was learned that the defendant allegedly targeted Carlisle residents because of their salaries and home prices with the intent of obtaining their personal information.
Carlisle residents that notice suspicious activity in the neighborhoods are encouraged to call the Carlisle Police Department. Investigators believe that the defendant may have targeted other Carlisle residents as well as victims in other communities. The investigation into this matter remains open and ongoing.
The defendant’s bail was set on $500 on this case and he was ordered to stay away from Carlisle. The defendant’s bail was subsequently revoked on an open case out of Norfolk County. The next date in this case is Jan. 23, 2020.
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
