Newport Man Arrested in Connection with Motor Vehicle Theft
NEWPORT, Vermont — Chief Seth DiSanto reports that a man wanted by Newport Police in connection with a car theft last month was arrested last night.
JONAH MONFETTE, AGE 36, OF NEWPORT was arrested on an existing warrant with charges of:
- Aggravated Operation Without Consent of Owner
- Driving with License Suspended
- Violation of Conditions of Release
On Monday, Nov. 18, Newport Police recieved a report from a male victim who indicated that MONFETTE had agreed to drive him to the emergency room two nights before after the victim had been injured at a bar in Barton. After driving the victim to the emergency room, MONFETTE allegedly left with his vehicle.
The following day, the victim attempted to retrieve the car at an address in Newport and subsequently learned that MONFETTE had taken the vehicle to Maine after he allegedly called a female party known to him — who he had been court-ordered not to contact — while the victim was present.
Through a subsequent investigation, officers confirmed the victim’s report that his vehicle was taken from the hospital by MONFETTE. Newport Police also determined that MONFETTE’S license was criminally suspended.
The vehicle was located on Nov. 21 in Concord, New Hampshire, and MONFETTE was taken into custody late on Dec. 19 after coming into contact with Vermont State Police.
He was arraigned today in Orleans County Superior Court and subsequently released on conditions.
